Social-media algorithms rule how we see the world — good luck trying to stop them

What’s at stake is no longer just missing a birthday — it’s your sanity, and world peace. Do you feel in control of your social media accounts? Most of us are familiar with how the story goes: a like on Instagram leads to seeing similar posts, while a retweet on Twitter usually refines topic suggestions for us somewhere down the line. We are led to believe we hold control over our feeds but the reality, as Joanna Stern shows, is far more complex than that. While definitely worrying, she also argues in her column for The Wall Street Journal, that there are things we can do, or demand, in order to fix the problem.
