Most of us are familiar with how the story goes: a like on Instagram leads to seeing similar posts, while a retweet on Twitter usually refines topic suggestions for us somewhere down the line. We are led to believe we hold control over our feeds but the reality, as Joanna Stern shows, is far more complex than that.
